Technology Operations Director
Shop Direct isn’t slowing down. We’re progressing our transformation whilst continuing to deliver sustainable, profitable growth. This places considerable demands on its technology function. Although the technology of the business has been effective in supporting its transformation thus far, we believe that we must now invest by hiring a world-class Technology Operations Director to lead the business through the next phase of its journey.
You’ll be based in our Liverpool, Speke HQ, working with and reporting to our Group CTO Andy Burton. The Tech Ops Director will be a key appointment within our leadership team and you’ll play a pivotal role in our technology vision, direction and operation. Here you’ll be an integral part in the foundations of the businesses technology delivering initiatives that underpin high levels of customer service.

At the same time, as our Tech Ops Director you will bring with you a highly commercial and strategic and innovative mind-set. Shop Direct is a business with ambitious plans and you’ll be tasked with managing the strategic relationships our external technology partners. Addressing the right balance of insourcing or outsourcing parts of our technology function, all whilst maintaining the highest levels of customer experience, stability and security.
For us, people leadership is key component of this role, here you’ll be working with in-house colleagues, third parties and technology partners such as IBM and 02. The expectation is that you’ll be an excellent people manager who can set the highest standards in terms of hiring, training and development, retention and employee satisfaction.
As our Tech Ops Director you will be critical in managing and creating a strategy which will allow all corners of the team to feel connected. You’ll need to foster a technology enabled customer-centric culture amidst large-scale transformation and re-platforming efforts. This role is highly visible, you will be seen by the executive leadership team, and indeed the entire Shop Direct organisation, as a deeply credible and trusted figure, and a key asset for the company. Having the ability to take ownership of projects and strategies and take a proactive approach to each aspect of their role.

As our Technology Operations Director you’ll need to utilise your strong technical background and with that be responsible for identifying our needs and deliver technology initiatives to create high levels of customer service in a cost-effective manner. Having a strategic mind-set to ensure that the developments made are consistent throughout the business whilst using the tools and systems available.
Having an analytical outlook is imperative to be able to review current systems and services and implement improvements which can further develop the effectiveness of the business. Meanwhile operating and managing a team whilst consistently creating relationships with stakeholders and external partners.

Proven skills within service delivery, information security, infrastructure management, enterprise IT and vendor management, this position needs a dedicated and supportive individual who can motivate a team to a high standard, even when on tight deadlines. Moreover, being able to manage expectations from all areas of the business.
Will have been part of a team which has gone through complex change and played a key role in delivering and evolving new ways of working using agile practices. Experience of leading agile, DevOps teams to deliver high velocity change whilst maintaining stability and integrity of services.
Effective and clear communication skills proven through previous collaborative experience both internally across different business areas and externally with strategic partners resulting in high results for the team and business. Will have demonstrated initiative and ambition through the relationships they have built and keen to replicate their achievements in their next venture.
Understands the cost and value of doing things and is able to develop a strategic vision for delivering tech services through a combination of internal teams and 3rd party service providers.
An analytical and methodical mind-set who can remain calm under pressure. By reviewing internal and external systems in place, the need to have an innate ability to drive and motivate a team is crucial, whilst having ongoing engagement with stakeholders. Also, to be aware that the tech team is an ongoing project, so being eager to contribute to the development is essential.

Will be passionate about modern platforms and techniques which will result in a more efficient and effective way of working. Having the ability to review current systems and create an innovative new strategy to become more cost-effective and ultimately create a better experience for the colleague or customer.
The ideal candidate will be/have:
- An excellent leader of people with a proven ability to build and sustain high-performing teams with a culture of collaboration, empowerment and accountability
- Strong commercial focus on creating value, optimizing costs and managing risks
- A strategic thinker, able to create a compelling vision and strategy, which inspires and motivates shareholders and colleagues
- Significant experience of managing strategic outsourcing partnerships, creating collaborative relationships focused on achieving business and customer outcomes, rather than minimizing cost and managing contract disputes
- Experience of managing infrastructure teams across all areas of strategy, project delivery and service delivery, from on-prem data centres to public cloud, and including enterprise technology.
- Proven experience of leading technology compliance and information security functions, fostering a culture of embedding security throughout the SDLC and finding ways to enable colleagues across the business to achieve their goals.
- Always looking to adopt modern ways of working, including agile and DevSecOps, and new tech products to deliver value quickly whilst excellent maintaining security and stability levels.
