Data Strategy Manager/Data Strategist

The Data Intelligence function sits at the heart of Shop Direct’s ambition to become a world-class digital retailer. The function exists to help turn data into insights that lead to action.
The function as a whole is growing and extending its impact. We’re enhancing our tools, our ways of working, and our operating model with the rest of the business. We’ve been at the heart of many new changes in Shop Direct over the past year, e.g. spinning up cross-functional product squads – almost all of which have DI input, and many of which sit within DI itself.

Today, we turnover more than £1.9bn, our websites get over 1.2m visits every day and 62% of our online sales are from mobile devices. We sell over 1,300 famous brands and deliver 49 million products to over four million customers each year.
About the role
As a Data Strategy Manager / Data Strategist, you will be a thought leader for the business, overseeing a set of
sub-teams to focus on determining how we can grow the value of our data assets and make use of them within the company. (Practical examples include, projects on how to deliver an enterprise data lake, storing all data in a higher-quality form than exists today; or helping to prioritise use cases for where data can add value across the business, which we’ll take forward within DI.)
Data Strategy is a diverse function aimed at enhancing and increasing the accessibility of our data assets, and with identifying long-term opportunities to increase the value of such assets.
As part of this role you will:
Collaborate with product, technical, and commercial teams to identify important questions
and determine how to help answer them with data.
- Hire and coach a high-calibre and diverse team of analysts and other team members.
- Work with the team to prioritise projects and initiatives to work on.
- Provide technical and practical leadership to the teams overall.
Where we are up to
We have a large amount of data but our legacy infrastructure makes it difficult to access and use. We’re partway through a multi-year programme to transform our data capabilities. We’ll be setting up a cloud infrastructure to store all of our data and modelling and transforming it to simplify access to it. We need to balance landing this strategic data environment against delivering more immediate value through data use cases – and this is the area where the data strategist can make the biggest difference by being a thought leader to the business and driving out data use cases.
The data strategist would need to have knowledge of GDPR but we wouldn’t expect this to take up a large part of their time – that’s covered by already by a linked team and the DPO.
In terms of tools, our approach is to enable the business to use the tools they need to do their jobs. We use SAS as our strategic analysis and data mining tool but we also use R and Python within our data science community.
We view Data as a megatrend on the same scale as the computing revolution. The future will look very different - in Retail and Financial Services as much as anywhere else. This brings a host of opportunities and threats, from startups and new business models, to new AI-enabled ways to shop. Shop Direct is in a fantastic position to take advantage of this, with an incredibly rich dataset spanning both retail and financial services. Our new CEO, Henry Birch, has emphasised Data as a priority, and we have secured a multi-million pound budget to drive forward a future-proof Data environment.
We need Data Strategists to own and drive our mission to maximise the value we get from Data, now and in the future.
This will involve:
* working with stakeholders across the business to understand what Data can do for them -- now, next year or in 5 years' time.
* ensuring a clear vision for Data in Shop Direct, that our senior-most leaders are aligned, and that we as a company are moving in the right direction.
* identifying where we could be getting more value from Data, and prioritising/ mobilising resources to make it happen
